1973 Volkswagen bus stuck in gear?

Rip off. The engine can be removed from the transaxle with two guys and a socket set in under an hour. The odds are that your clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing may have failed, which would explain your inability to shift, and they are mounted to the back of the engine at the flywheel, with the throw-out bearing sitting over the transmissions shaft inside the transmission housing. If you decide not to take on this relatively easy task with a few buddies and a suitcase of beer, try someone who specializes in old Porsche and Volkswagen's.
